Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem had said that Cyprus' accession to the European Union would be a "pyrrhic victory" and constitutes Ankara's "trump card" in its effort to obstruct Cyprus' accession, which would bring new suffering to the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. President Clerides added that if Turkey genuinely wants peace in Cyprus then why does the Turkish side not return to the UN-led proximity talks which aim at reaching an overall settlement on the island. The President was replying to press questions in Cairo yesterday at the end of a private visit to Egypt and after meeting with the country's Prime Minister Mr Atef Ebeid and Foreign Minister Mr Amr Moussa. During the meetings the further development of cooperation between the two countries and Cyprus' role as a bridge connecting Europe to this region were discussed. Asked about Cyprus' position on the Palestinian question, President Clerides expressed support for an immediate solution through negotiations and without preconditions adding that Cyprus recognises the right of the Palestinians to set up their own independent state.
