[01] Cyprus' Chief EU negotiator outlines progress of Cyprus' accession course

President Clerides had a meeting yesterday with Cyprus' Chief Negotiator for EU accession, Mr George Vasiliou.

In statements afterwards, Mr Vasiliou said that on Thursday an important chapter in Cyprus' negotiations will be closed, that of the free movement of capital. He said this is related to money laundering and the fact that all 15 EU member states have agreed to the closure of this chapter means that they are satisfied with the way Cyprus' money laundering controls.

He said that in addition progress has been achieved in a number of other chapters such as the free movement of persons, the freedom to provide services, transport policy and energy.

Mr Vasiliou expressed the hope that a further four to six chapters will be closed within the Swedish Presidency, meaning that Cyprus will have covered four fifths of the way towards completing the negotiations.

[02] EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee Meeting starts

The 19th meeting of the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee opened in Limassol yesterday.

Addressing the meeting Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, joint Chairman of the meeting, said that so far 17 out of the 29 chapters under negotiation have been completed, while a further five chapters are in the final stages of discussion.

He recalled that of the six the Luxembourg group of countries making up the first wave of candidates for EU entry, Cyprus is the only one not receiving any economic aid from the pre-accession programmes.

He added that nevertheless Cyprus' harmonisation with the acquis communautaire, entails a considerable cost for the island, a cost that will be covered from its own resources and based on a timetable whereby entry will be achieved by 2003 or 2004 at the latest.

[03] Greek and British Foreign Ministers discuss Cyprus

Britain's Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has expressed the hope that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will return to the negotiating table to reach a settlement in Cyprus and said the need for progress in the Cyprus peace effort will be constantly raised with Turkey during its dialogue with the European Union.

Mr Cook referred to the Cyprus problem speaking at a press conference after a two-hour meeting in London with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou.

[04] Conservative Party says Britain has a special interest in Cyprus' future

Britain's Shadow Foreign Minister, Mr Francis Maude, has said that Britain has a special interest in Cyprus future as a member of the EU, and as one of its three guarantors.

In a lecture on the Conservative Party's approach to Foreign Policy in London last week, Mr Maude said that this means that Britain will always be involved in work to end the division there and work towards a settlement.

"Until a solution is agreed, the Cyprus dispute will hinder Turkey's relations with the west", he added.
