[01] President Clerides comments on the crisis in Turkey

The issue of the continuation of the UN sponsored talks on Cyprus is before the Secretary General, who may be contemplating if this is the right moment to set a date for the talks due to the internal crisis in Turkey, President Glafcos Clerides has stated.

Replying to questions on 22 February, President Clerides said the crisis in Turkey might have an adverse effect on Cyprus if it is prolonged, in the sense that the Turkish government will not be in a position to take decisions.

He also noted that it would also be negative for Cyprus if the crisis is resolved with an intervention by the military, while if a compromise is found the question arises of how long the present Turkish government remains in power.

[02] Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates sign air transportation memorandum

Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates have signed a memorandum of cooperation in the field of air transportation, which will contribute to the further strengthening of economic relations between the two countries.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Works Mr Vassos Pyrgos and the Deputy Minister of Communications and Works of the United Arab Emirates Mr Mohammed Mr Yahya Al-Sueweidi, signed the memorandum on behalf of their respective countries.

[03] New Romanian ambassador to Cyprus

"Romania is a well-known promoter for a viable solution to the Cyprus problem. In our opinion the island should be reunited as soon as possible, based on the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and taking into account the decisions of the European Union Helsinki Summit", Romania's new ambassador to Cyprus Mr Gostin Georgescu has stated.

Presenting his credentials on 23 February to President Clerides, Mr Georgescu, said that Romania and Cyprus enjoy excellent relations in the political, economic and cultural fields and promised to work hard to extend relations and consolidate the existing friendship between the two countries.

Accepting the credentials, President Clerides expressed "the political will and determination to strengthen even further the bonds of friendship, understanding and cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of our two countries".

Referring to the Cyprus problem the President reiterated the political will of the Greek-Cypriot community to negotiate a just and lasting solution, which will serve the interests of all the people of Cyprus.
