[02] Foreign and European Affairs Committee delegation in Ireland for talksIrish officials reiterated their country's firm position that a solution of the Cyprus problem must be based on the relevant United Nations resolutions and expressed support for Cyprus' European Union accession course during meetings in Dublin with a delegation of the Foreign and European Affairs' Committee of the Cyprus House of Representatives. The President of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, leading a four-member parliamentary delegation was in Dublin for a two-day official visit to brief Irish parliamentarians and other officials on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and Cyprus' EU accession course. Speaking at the meeting of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Irish Oireachtas (Parliament), Mr Papadopoulos called on the Irish parliamentarians to contribute to the efforts for finding a viable solution to the Cyprus problem and for accession to the European Union. The fulfilment of these aims would allow the people of Cyprus to live in conditions of lasting peace, stability and social and economic prosperity, he said. He underlined the Cyprus government's firm position that it will never accept any ideas or proposals which are incompatible with the acquis communautaire, or fail to provide for the full respect of the human rights and the basic freedoms of all citizens, or promote directly or indirectly a confederal solution to the Cyprus problem. "We are aiming at a solution of a bizonal and bicommunal federation, in line with the UN resolutions. Even though a bizonal federation is not the best solution for Cyprus, we know of no other solution, which may lead to the reunification of Cyprus", he said. Referring to Cyprus' EU accession course, he pointed out that Cyprus is ahead of all the other candidate countries because it has already closed 17 of the 29 Chapters and has opened negotiations on the remaining twelve. He also noted that finding a solution to the Cyprus problem before Cyprus' accession to the European Union is the most desired aim. [03] Philippe Morillon: the wall that divides the people of Cyprus must fallEuropean Parliament Member Philippe Morillon referred to the Cyprus problem yesterday, during the discussion of the report by Rapporteur Hannes Swoboda on the proposal of European Union assistance to Turkey in the framework of the pre-accession strategy, and in particular on the establishment of an Accession Partnership.Mr Morillon said that irrespective of the kind of solution reached in Cyprus what is especially important and imperative is that the wall, which divides the people of Cyprus and prohibits free movement, must fall. The freedom of movement of people and goods in the whole island must be safeguarded, he said. [04] Government protests against violations of Cyprus' airspaceThe Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Sotos Zackheos, has strongly protested to the UN against massive violations of the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus and of the flight information region of Nicosia by Turkish military aircraft, recorded on 1,7,10,12,18, and 20 December 2000 as well as on 7, 10, 12, 18, 23, 24, 28 and 29 January 2001.In his letter addressed to the United Nations Secretary General on 8 February 2001, the Cyprus Ambassador stressed that these provocative acts which violate international law as well as the Security Council resolutions on Cyprus, are taking place at a time when the international community expects the Turkish side to reverse its decision not to attend the next round of negotiations. "The government of Turkey should abide by the UN Charter, respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and contribute towards finding a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the United Nations resolutions" he said.
