[01] Cyprus proximity talks to resume later than expected

Asked whether the Government is satisfied with the way the U.N. Secretary- General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Mr Alvaro de Soto, is handling the Cyprus problem, the Government Spokesman, Mr Michalis Papapetrou said yesterday:

"The way Mr de Soto rounded up his visit to Cyprus is to a great degree objective and reflects the fact that the Turkish Cypriot Leader, Mr Rauf Denktash, has unjustifiably abandoned the procedure of the proximity talks."

Replying to another question whether in the Government's view Mr de Soto expects to achieve something from his forthcoming visit to Ankara, Mr Papapetrou said: "The statements made by Turkish officials and Mr Denktash do not leave much room for optimism. However, I hope that this assessment of the Government will be proved wrong and that Mr De Soto will come across a positive climate during his meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr Ismail Cem."

Meanwhile, the Director of the Information Service of the UN Office in Geneva, briefing journalists on 30 January on preparations for the Cyprus proximity talks, said the talks would resume later than when they had originally been expected to (around the end of January), but that no date was given and Mr de Soto was continuing his efforts.
