Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 01-01-30Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Tuesday, 30 January 2001CONTENTS[01] President Clerides meets with UN Secretary General's Special AdviserThe President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides had a second meeting yesterday with the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Mr Alvaro de Soto, who briefed him on the views of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktash, who has declared that he would not be participating in the UN-led Proximity talks on a Cyprus settlement.Government Spokesman Mr Michalis Papapetrou said it is obvious that the Turkish side insists on the policy of torpedoing the proximity talks on the pretext that they are based on the rationale of the decisions and resolutions of the UN Security Council. Mr Papapetrou said that President Clerides reiterated to the UN official his position that the both the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides "have an obligation to continue the procedure as determined by the Secretary- General" and that in this direction he expects the Secretary General to fix a date immediately for the proximity talks to be continued. President Clerides repeated to Mr de Soto that the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Cyprus in May in no way affect the talks and that as the representative of the Greek Cypriot side he is ready to participate in the proximity talks in February, March and April, Mr Papapetrou added. [02] Greek Parliamentarians in Cyprus for talksForeign Minister Mr Ioannis Kasoulides had a meeting yesterday with Members of the Greek Parliament's European Affairs Committee, who are on an official visit to Cyprus.Speaking to the press after the meeting, the President of the Committee Mr Constantinos Vretos said that he had a detailed discussion on Cyprus' EU accession course. The Greek Parliament will not sign any agreement for the enlargement of the European Union if Cyprus is not included in the first group of countries to join the European Union, he said adding that the other EU member states should understand this. For his part, Mr Kasoulides said the talks focused on the current developments in Cyprus' EU accession course and ways with which the Greek Parliament could offer its assistance. The Greek Parliament Members also met with House of Representatives President Mr Spyros Kyprianou, who expressed gratitude on behalf of all Cypriots for Greece's support in the efforts for Cyprus settlement.
