[01] Cyprus will meet Maastrich criteria by end 2001

Cyprus' economic indicators will meet the Maastricht criteria before the end of 2001 and not within 2002 as previously predicted, Finance Minister Takis Klerides has said.

Speaking after a meeting on the EU Commission's latest progress report on Cyprus, Mr Klerides said that although the report is positive we must not relax but must work according to the timeline we have set out, as our targets are clear.

[02] Spokesman denounces violent Turkish suppression of prison unrest

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou yesterday denounced the bloody suppression of prison unrest in Turkey by the Turkish government.

He said that the violent and inhumane methods used by the Turkish police "reveal a mentality which conflicts harshly with human rights and the levels of democracy required of a modern state.

"Such behaviour proves yet again that big changes are needed if this country is to advance towards Europe and also shows that the continuation of the present situation is a constant impediment for starting accession negotiations between the EU and Turkey".
