[01] President Clerides: UN Secretary General will present draft settlement in June

"I believe that prior to any direct talks with Mr Denktash, the Secretary- General will submit, around June, to the two sides a comprehensive plan for the solution of the Cyprus problem. I also believe that before any direct meeting, Mr Annan will listen to the views of both sides in detail on the text he intends to propose", President Glafcos Clerides said yesterday.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport, on his arrival from Athens, where he held talks with the Greek Government on the 5th round of UN sponsored talks on Cyprus held in Geneva, President Clerides said this round was better than the previous rounds of proximity talks.

The U.N. Secretary-General's statement "contained several positive elements for our side" he said, adding that "of course there were also some negative elements, which we shall discuss at the National Council because they are negative".

Invited to comment on statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem that if Cyprus did not become two separate states, then it would turn into a Bosnia situation, President Clerides said, " I must say that constitutes a threat, but we are not scared".

Asked if a reference to the European Union in Annan's statement changes facts concerning the Cyprus problem, President Clerides said: "For the first time, the UN Secretary-General stated in Geneva that the solution of the Cyprus problem must be compatible with the acquis communautaire so that Cyprus may to accede to the EU without any changes to the agreement to be reached."

President Clerides noted that "it is also the first time the Secretary- General states that the solution must be compatible with the international conventions on human rights."

[02] Simitis and Clerides agree that the talks were positive and useful

Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis had a meeting in Athens yesterday during which they discussed developments at the 5th round of UN sponsored proximity talks in Geneva, increased cooperation between Cyprus and Greece in the defence sector and European Union relations with Cyprus and Turkey. Also present at the meeting were the Cypriot and Greek Foreign Ministers, Ioannis Kasoulides and George Papandreou, respectively.

Speaking to the press afterwards, the Greek Prime Minister said that both the Greek and Cyprus governments believed that the talks were generally positive and useful to the efforts for a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Those rejecting the talks are those who do not want a solution to the Cyprus problem, Mr Simitis said, adding Mr Denktash's negative stance shows that the talks are heading towards a direction that does not serve his purposes.

The Greek Prime Minister underlined that the solution of the Cyprus problem must be based on the United Nations resolutions, providing for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty, nationality and international personality.

Replying to questions he said that negotiations are extremely difficult, but we must continue in order to have a positive result. He also pointed out that although the problems have not been resolved, the views of the Greek Cypriot side have a certain level of acceptance.

For his part, President Clerides expressed satisfaction that Greece and Cyprus share the same policy and the same positions on Cyprus, as well as on other issues.
