[01] President Clerides: solution must be based on UN Security Council resolutions and high level agreements

The most important United Nations initiative since 1974 is now in progress President Glafcos Clerides said yesterday.

Addressing the anti-occupation march, organised by Morphou refugees, President Clerides expressed the hope that this initiative will lead to a solution of the Cyprus problem which will be in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the 1977 and 1979 high level agreements, the human rights conventions, international law and the acquis communautaire.

The President stressed that the agreement reached must envisage the restoration of justice in Cyprus and the establishment of a united, demilitarised federated state, which will be a member of the European Union, whose Common Foreign and Security Policy it will consistently follow.

This state will serve the interests of both sides and contribute to peace, political stability, security and cooperation between the countries in the region, he said.

President Clerides expressed his resoluteness to continue his efforts in this direction.
