The third Agreement amounts to 2.424.000 ÅURO (EU contribution: 1.975.000 ÅURO, Cyprus contribution: 449.000 ÅURO), for the "Development of Civil Society". The first two Financing Agreements aim at supporting Cyprus efforts in its path towards the accession to the European Union. The first Financing Agreement will facilitate the participation of Cypriot companies and research entities to the RTD programme of the European Union. This programme allows the creation or strengthening of links between training and research establishments in Cyprus and the European Union. The second Agreement will partly cover the needs arising from the main categories of measures included in the sectorial harmonisation programmes. This involves (the setting up of the new and the enhancement of existing institutional/ organisational structures, (2) the training of public sector officials in familiarising themselves with the procedures required for effectively implementing the acquis and (3) the promotion of administrative co-operation with the European Union. The third Agreement, 2.424.000 EURO, will foster the development of civil society at this crucial stage of negotiations for the settlement of the Cyprus problem. This will encourage activities aiming at bi-communal interaction and co-operation. This should meet the common interest of the two communities on the island. The said Financing Agreements, which were concluded after negotiations between the relevant authorities of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union, have already been signed on behalf of the European Union by the Commissioner for Enlargement, Mr. Gunter Verheugen.
