[01] UN Security Council reiterates that the status quo in Cyprus is unacceptable

In a statement made yesterday in New York, the President of the Security Council French Ambassador Mr Jean David Levitte said that «Security Council members today heard a briefing by the Secretary General's special Adviser for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, on the proximity talks preparing the ground for meaningful negotiations leading to a comprehensive settlement.

This is a matter, which the Security Council continues to follow with the closest of interest. The Council has stated repeatedly that the status quo in Cyprus in unacceptable».

Mr. Levitte noted that «Council members welcomed the fact that the first two rounds of talks had been conducted in a positive and constructive atmosphere, and without preconditions. They commended the commitment shown by the participants, and encouraged all concerned to continue their efforts towards a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question on the basis of the relevant resolutions of the Security Council. They looked forward to the continuation of the talks from 5 July.

Mr Levitte also said that the Council will take early action to renew the UNFICYP mandate.

[02] New Cyprus Ambassador accredited in Argentina

Ambassador Ms Athina Mavronicola presented today her credentials to the President of Argentina Mr Fernando de la Rua.

In a meeting following the formal ceremony, Ms Mavronicola briefed the Argentinean President on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and thanked Mr De la Rua for his country's participation in the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.

Ms Mavronicola held also a meeting yesterday with Argentinean Defence Minister Mr Ricardo Lopez Murphy.

Mr Lopez Murphy gave assurances to the Cypriot Ambassador that his country will continue to provide both moral and material support to the Cyprus cause.

The presence of the Argentinean contingent in Cyprus, the Minister said, reflects Argentina's adherence to peace, international law and the protection of human rights.
