[01] The construction of marinas, an important development in maritime tourism, says Rolandis

Cyprus Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis, announced yesterday the construction of six marinas, of a total capacity of four thousand vessels, which will begin operating in Cyprus by the end of the year 2002.

Mr. Rolandis noted that the construction of the marinas constitutes an important development in Cyprus maritime tourism.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Rolandis said that the plenary session of the House of Representatives passed the special regulations for the marinas last Thursday and that international tenders would be requested by this autumn, adding that the marinas would be built with the method of self funding and would cost around 100 million pounds.

Mr. Rolandis added that Cyprus/ prospects in maritime tourism seem bright, as the demand for mooring of recreation vessels is on the increase.

Responding to questions, he said that the marinas would remain state property, but would be given to the private sector for about twenty years.

Mr. Rolandis also noted an increase of 23 per cent in tourist arrivals in April increased by 23 percent. The increase in the first four months of the year reached 16 per cent.

[02] Tourist arrivals increase in April

Arrival of tourists in April 2000 recorded an increase of 23,2 per cent, reaching 221,785 compared to 180,76 in the corresponding month last year, with tourists mainly arriving from European Union countries, especially the UK.

According to Statistical Service records, for the period January - April 2000 arrivals of tourists reached 508.068 compared to 438.353 in April 1999, marking an increase of 15,9 per cent.

The number of arrivals covering all categories of travellers reached 283.470 in April, showing an increase of 19.6 per cent, while for the period January - April 2000 arrivals of travellers reached 697.934 compared to 615.829 in 1999.

The main countries of tourist arrivals were the United Kingdom with 42,3 per cent, Germany with 12,2 per cent, Greece with 5,1 per cent, Russia with 4,6 per cent, Switzerland with 3,9 per cent, France with 2,8 per cent and the Netherlands with 2,8 per cent. The overwhelming majority of arrivals came from EU countries with 79,4 per cent.
