[01] President Clerides continues visit to Israel

The President of the Republic visited yesterday the second biggest air base in Israel and was briefed on recent developments in air war-fare machinery. Speaking to the press, President Clerides said he was impressed by his visit to Hatzerim base.

Referring to his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Mr Ehud Barak, President Clerides said that "we had the opportunity to exchange views with

Mr Barak on the situation in the broader region and identify the dangers that might emerge"

He also said that he briefed the Israeli Premier on efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem and stressed that Cyprus does not favour the creation of military alliances.

[02] President Clerides and Patriarch Diodoros exchange decorations

The President of the Republic visited yesterday the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Diodoros. During an official ceremony, President Clerides decorated Patriarch Diodoros with the Grand Collar of the Order of Makarios III and thanked him for his services to the nation.

In return, Patriarch Diodoros decorated the Cypriot President with the Patriarchate/s highest award.

[03] The President of the Republic congratulates the newly-elected President of the Russian Federation

The President of the Republic, Mr Glafcos Clerides, has sent the following congratulatory telegram to the newly-elected President of the Russian Federation, Mr Vladimir Putin:

"On the occasion of your election as President of the Russian Federation please accept, Your Excellency, my heartiest congratulations and best wishes for every success on the pursuance of your very important mission.

I take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation for the constant support of the Russian Federation to our firm commitment and continuous efforts to find a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions."

[04] Slovakia reiterates its firm support to a just Cyprus settlement

Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr Nicos Rolandis, who is on an official visit to Slovakia, held yesterday a meeting with the Slovak Foreign Minister Mr E. Kukan.

The Slovak Minister referred to his country's firm support for a just Cyprus settlement within the framework of UN resolutions and stressed the importance of EU accession negotiations.

Mr Rolandis briefed Mr Kucan on commercial and tourism activities and on the creation of high technology units in Cyprus.

Moreover Mr Rolandis suggested the organisation of a seminar in Cyprus next year with the participation of business people from both countries.

Mr Rolandis also spoke at a seminar yesterday on the promotion of services from Cyprus.

In his speech he stressed that "although the quality of services is in line with European standards, the fees are lower, making professional services from Cyprus extremely reliable and affordable."
