[01] Greek and Turkish Cypriots join forces to save leukaemia-suffering child

Hundreds of Turkish Cypriots, including Turkish Cypriot leader's son Mr. Serdar Denktash and opposition Republican Turkish Party leader Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat gave blood yesterday in the search for a suitable bone-marrow donor to save a Greek Cypriot child, suffering from leukaemia. The Turkish Cypriots made their donations at the UN-controlled Ledra Palace hotel in Nicosia.

Mr Serdar Denktash, who is the leader of the Democratic Party said that «I am trying to be helpful to a little human being». The President of the Turkish Cypriot Republican Party Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat described the event as «very good and necessary».

«It is a human activity and we always support peace and good relations between the two communities he said, adding, «it also helps build confidence between the two communities».

Government Spokesman Mr Michalis Papapetrou said the effort to find a donor had overcome the island/s division, proving that Greek and Turkish Cypriots can live together.

«Every response to this humanitarian issue is positive, we see ordinary Turkish Cypriots response to this humanitarian call as very positive. It has superseded separation and segregation and showed that Greek and Turkish Cypriots could not only be the citizens of the same state but act as such».

[02] Finnish envoy considers New York talks a unique opportunity to solve the Cyprus problem

Finland's special envoy for Cyprus Mr Jaako Blomberg said yesterday that there is now a «unique opportunity and a new sense of dynamism to help bring about a solution to the Cyprus problem», which should not be missed.

He also said external factors, such as improved Greco-Turkish relations, favour a solution but it is up to the parties themselves to agree on a settlement which should be based on the principles outlined by the UN Secretary General.

Speaking after a meeting yesterday with President Glafcos Clerides, Mr. Blomberg said the purpose of his visit is to «assess the current situation in the UN peace process and express the desire to have the parties move in to substantive negotiations in New York». «We feel this is a unique opportunity which should not be missed», the Finnish diplomat said.

Invited to give his assessment of the situation, he said «there is a new sense of dynamism in the process that should be acted upon and it is for the UN Secretary General to work with the leaders of the two communities».

Replying to questions, he noted that Finland supports the UN Secretary General/s mandate which he described as the «only viable way to move ahead».«It is for the parties to agree on the terms of a settlement and the UN is there to assist them», he added.

[03] Nicosia hosts the 28th meeting of the European Radiocommunications Committee

The 28th meeting of the European Radiocommunications Committee opened yesterday in Nicosia with the participation of 43 representatives of the European Conference of Post and Telecommunications administration member states (CEPT) as well as the European Commission and other European Telecommunications Organisations.

Participants will discuss issues such as the draft decisions on extending the frequency bands for the introduction of terrestrial universal mobile telecommunications systems and the licensing of satellite interactive terminals.

The meeting ending March 31, will also examine the reports from the various working groups and will discuss cooperation with the European Commission and other bodies.

[04] Hungary expresses wholeheartedly its support to Cyprus/ struggle

A Hungarian Parliamentary Delegation headed by the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly Mr Istvan Szent-Ivanyi expressed yesterday its solidarity to the government of Cyprus in its efforts to reunite the country on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation as stipulated for in UN resolutions.

The four-members of the Foreign Affairs Committee discussed with Cypriot MPs the island's political problem, the European Union accession course of the two countries and economic relations.

Speaking to the press after a meeting with Acting House President Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, Mr Szent-Ivanyi said that as long as Turkey maintains its intransigent stand on Cyprus, it should be ready to assume the implications of this intransigence within the European Union.

The two committees also decided to form Friendship Groups in their respective Parliaments with a view to substantially upgrade the interparliamentary relations of the two countries.
