Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 00-02-07Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Monday, 7 February 2000[01]Cyprus' Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said on Friday that the real interests of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities are not served by prolonging the confrontation but through friendship, cooperation and peaceful coexistence."Let us leave aside polemics and act in accordance with the requirements of our era", he said. Mr Papapetrou was referring to a written statement by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, accusing President Glafcos Clerides of "hypocrisy" and "distortion of the reality" in Cyprus. Expressing sadness over the statement, Mr Papapetrou pointed out that President Clerides had "simply stressed his willingness and readiness to negotiate within the ambit set by the international community and the UN by their resolutions and decisions" for a settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation. The Greek Cypriot side, he added, is participating in the present talks with good will, aiming at reaching a peaceful understanding and compromise between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in the context of a bizonal bicommunal federation, a solution which had been agreed to by both communities and adopted repeatedly not only by Turkey and Greece but, also, by the whole of the international community. [02]The Secretary General of the Council of the European Union (EU) and High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana supports a more active involvement of the European Union (EU) in efforts for a Cyprus settlement.Speaking to Brussels accredited journalists on Friday, Solana said UN-led proximity talks in Geneva were a positive factor and added that the EU should step up its efforts towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, in view of the fact that Cyprus would one day join the EU. [03]Cyprus' State Budget for the year 2000 was approved on Friday with only minor cuts. The Budget foresees expenditure of 2.007,4 billion pounds on a net income of 1.366 billion. The deficit is estimated at some 660 million pounds higher than the arrears of the 1999 budget.
