  • [01] New Ministers and Government Spokesman appointed

    Three new ministers gave the prescribed affirmation, while a new Government Spokesman was appointed, during an official ceremony today at the Presidential palace before President Glafcos Clerides.

    Mr Socrates Hassikos, former Democratic Rally (DISY) deputy for Kyrenia, takes over from Mr Yiannakis Chrysostomis, as the new Minister of Defence.

    Mr Averof Neophytou, also former DISY deputy in the Paphos district, replaces Mr Leontios Ierodiakonou as the new Minister of Communications and Works.

    Mr Frixos Savvides, managing director at an auditor's office and chairman of Apollon football club, takes up the post of Minister of Health, replacing Mr Christos Solomis.

    Mr Michael Papapetrou, a lawyer and Deputy President of the United Democrats (EDE), replaces journalist Costas Serezis as the new Government Spokesman.

    After the ceremony the new members of the cabinet went to their Ministries to assume their duties. Later in the day they will attend their first cabinet meeting, at the Presidential retreat at Troodos mountain, to be presided over by President Clerides.
