Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 99-07-27Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Tuesday, 27 July 1999[01] p>Government Spokesman Costas Serezis reiterated yesterday the government position for a bizonal, bicommunal federation on the island, as it has been agreed at the 1977 High Level Agreements.Invited to comment on statements by Britain's envoy for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay in support of a loose federation on the island, Mr Serezis said: "our position is also in favour of a federal solution", noting that regarding "internal issues the two communities should enjoy the highest possible level of autonomy". Mr Serezis also stressed that the federal government should be vested with powers that would maintain the unity of the state. He added that President Clerides will handle those issues should negotiations start in autumn. [02] p>The New Hampshire House of Representatives issued a Declaration last week congratulating the Republic of Cyprus for its strenuous efforts over the past 25 years to reach a peaceful and lasting solution in accordance with UN resolutions.The Declaration was adopted on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the invasion of Cyprus, at the initiative of State Representative William B. Tsiros. [03] p>Total imports and exports in Cyprus marked a decrease during January-April 1999 as compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.According to the Department of Statistics and Research, total imports fell to L600 .1 mn compared to L630 . 3 mn in January-April 1998. Total exports also fell to L153.6 mn in relation to L197.5 mn during the same period last year. As a result of the above developments, the trade deficit accounted for L446.5 mn compared to L432.8 mn in 1998. [04] p>The arrival of travellers in Cyprus has reached 329.620 in June 1999, recording an increase of 8,8 per cent compared to the corresponding month last year.In a report released yesterday by the Department of Statistics and Research, tourist arrivals reached 276.879. in June 1999 compared to 248.426 in the corresponding month last year.
