[01] Solomou case admitted by Human Rights Court

The European Court of Human Rights has declared as admissible the case of the family of Solomos Solomou, shot dead by Turks during a peaceful demonstration against the Turkish occupation of Cyprus held in Dherynia in August 1996, who filed a suit against Turkey in Strasbourg in February.

The Court ruled that the application of the Solomou family was admissible after Turkey abstained from submitting any observations on its admissibility and a hearing on its merits will follow.

The Court is initially asking Turkey to justify Solomou's death in view of its claims that he was attempting to take down the Turkish flag.

The Court agrees with the view of the Cypriot lawyers that the Turkish flag was flying illegally on Cypriot territory.

The family of Tassos Isaac, who was clubbed to death in the buffer zone during the Dherynia events, has also filed an application to the European Court of Human Rights.

[02] Australian Assembly passes resolution on Cyprus

The House of Assembly of the South Australian Parliament yesterday unanimously passed a resolution supporting the reunification of Cyprus.

The motion, which was adopted only a few days before the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of part of Cyprus, reaffirms its commitment to a peaceful solution to the division of Cyprus and supports calls by the UN for fundamental new ways of developing asingle federal constitution.

During the debate, South Australian Labour's Opposition leader, Mike Rann, MP, called for stronger action by the Australian government and by Australia's special envoy on Cyprus, Stephen Spender.

He said he was "disappointed" that the Australian federal government was not giving strong backing for his proposal for a Commonwealth Heads of Government initiative and an eminent persons Commission on Cyprus.

Rann said he would like to see the Australian government sponsoring test cases in the European Court of Human Rights for Australian citizens of Greek Cypriot origin and put pressure on Turkey over its illegal occupation of the island.

[03] EU could be leverage to a solution, says German parliamentarian

The President of the German Parliament European Affairs Committee, Friedbert Pflueger, has said that the island's membership negotiations with the EU could create some sort of leverage for the solution to the Cyprus problem..

"It is wrong to say that first you have to solve your problems and then you can become member of the EU because that would give away of the possibility of the leverage and would give the key and also the veto power to Ankara,

which is not acceptable", he said yesterday after a meeting with House President Spyros Kyprianou.

The German parliamentarian, who heads a seven-member delegation, also expressed the hope that both sides would take part in peace negotiations this autumn, without preconditions and on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions.
