[01] Holbrooke and Papandreou discuss Cyprus

The situation in Cyprus and the Kosovo issue were discussed at a meeting in New York between the Greek Foreign Minister, Mr Papandreou, and US Special Envoy, Richard Holbrooke yesterday.

Asked if there was any prospect for movement on Cyprus, Mr Holbrooke said that the US "remain heavily engaged".

"We are talking to all the parties frequently, but at this point I think I would be misleading you if I said I saw any signs of any breakthroughs", he added.

On his part Mr Papandreou said that there have been some discussions about the G-8 possibly taking an initiative. He added that the process of Cyprus' accession to the EU has created a new dynamic and created new prospects for co-operation on the island.

"We do hope that at some point the Turkish Cypriot community will feel that this a great opportunity to begin to work with the Greek Cypriot community and be part of the negotiating team", he said.

Mr Papandreou will be going to Washington today where he will be meeting with the US Secretary of State and other senior American officials and members of Congress.

[02] British government's efforts to bring two communities together have been halted since 1997

The British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Mrs Quin, replying to a question in the House of Commons on 24.5.99 on what the British government has done to encourage contacts between the two communities in Cyprus, said that since December 1997 most bi-communal contacts have been banned by the Turkish Cypriot side.

"We have therefore found it effectively impossible to arrange bi-communal contacts on-island", she said, adding that a meeting of Greek and Turkish Cypriot scholars was, however, held in London.

Ms Quin said that the British High Commission in Cyprus had previously worked hard to bring the two communities together. They created the Westminster group to promote the principles of democracy through bi- communal contacts with members of all professions and organised various events that brought members of the two communities together.
