[01] New British High Commissioner to Cyprus presents credentials

The President of Cyprus Mr Glafcos Clerides received at a formal ceremony today the credentials of the new British High Commissioner to Cyprus Mr Edward Clay.

Presenting his credentials Mr Clay emphasised the strong ties that exist between Britain and Cyprus and reiterated his government's commitment to a settlement of the Cyprus problem based on a bizonal bicommunal federation. He also expressed support for Cyprus application for European Union membership.

Receiving the credentials, President Clerides said that the United Kingdom as a guarantor power of the independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus, has a special responsibility towards it and its High Commmissioner carries always a weighty and important task. He expressed gratitude for Britain's support and decisive contribution to Cyprus' efforts to fulfil its European vocation. The Cyprus government counts on Britain's involvement in the search for a just, viable and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem, he said.

[02] Cyprus and Equator sign a political consultations protocol

Cyprus and Equator have signed a political consultations protocol last Monday. The protocol provides for the exchange of consultations between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries, in the framework of which bilateral relations, domestic and international problems of mutual interest will be discussed.

The protocol aims at promoting dialogue and further enhancing the friendly relations and co-operation that exist between the two countries.

The agreement was signed by Ambassador Alexandros Vikis on behalf of Cyprus and Foreign Minister Jose Ayala Lasso on behalf of Equator.

[03] Health Agreement between Cyprus and Tatzikistan

The Minister of Health Mr Christos Solomis has signed on behalf of the Cyprus an interstate agreement with Tatzikistan in the fields of Public Health and Medicine.

The agreement provides for the exchange of information, experience and expertise in various fields concerning health , as well as for co-operation between the two countries' institutions and organisations.
