[01] US House Committee commends Cyprus government´s actions for peace on the island

The International Relations Committee of the US House of Representatives commended last week the Cyprus government´s «extraordinarily conciliatory and courageous actions» in the interest of peace on Cyprus and called on the US to «do all that is possible to bring about commensurate actions by Turkey». In an amendment on Cyprus adopted by the Committee on April 15, the Committee notes that at the urging of the US government, the Republic of Cyprus «refrained from exercising the country´s sovereign right to self- defense, a right fully recognised by the US government and by article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations.

It also notes that with this action Cyprus displayed its full compliance with the recently adopted United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1217 and 1218», its support for President Clinton´s commitment «to take all necessary steps to support a sustained effort to implement UNSCR 1218» and «to reduce tensions and move towards a Cyprus settlement».

In conclusion, the amendment states that «the time has come for US to expect from Turkey actions on the Cyprus issue in the interest of peace including steps in conformity with US proposals concerning Cyprus».
