[01] Cyprus and Greece sign agreement for the deployment of Russian S300 missiles on Crete

Cyprus and Greece have signed an agreement for the deployment of the Russian S300 anti-aircraft missile system on the island of Crete.

The agreement was signed late night in Athens by the Cyprus Defence Minister Mr Yiannakis Chrysostomis, who is currently visiting the Greek capital, and his Greek counterpart Mr Akis Tsohatzopoulos .

Earlier in the day, the two Ministers and their delegations held official talks aimed at reaching joint positions on the technical and economic aspects of the deployment of the missiles, which the Cyprus government will subsequently present to Russia.

Speaking to the press after the meeting both Ministers expressed satisfaction with the outcome of their discussions.

Mr Tsohatzopoulos stressed the importance of the joint Greco-Cypriot joint defence pact, which was agreed between the two governments in November 1993 and said that talks also covered ways of strengthening it, so as "to maintain the certainty among the Cypriots and the Greeks that Cyprus will be secure and that Greece will guarantee the island's security."

The Greek Defence Minister also said that a Cyprus Government delegation together with a Greek Defence Ministry representative, will travel to Moscow on Monday 15 February, to finalise the details of the matter.

On his part the Cyprus Defence Minister described the meeting as satisfactory and pointed out that the talks were conducted in a spirit of mutual understanding and harmonious co-operation.

Mr Chrysostomis will return from Athens on Wednesday.
