[01] Britain determined to play an active role in the process for a Cyprus settlement

Speaking after a meeting in London with Cyprus High Commissioner, Michalis Attalides, which was also attended by Britain's Special Representative for Cyprus Sir David Hannay, Mrs Quin repeated the Prime Minister's commitment " to a sustained effort to reduce tension and to address the core issues of a Cyprus settlement as called for in UN Security Council Resolutions 1217 and 1218".

According to a statement issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Mrs Quin "underlined, as Sir David had done, the continuing support of the British government for a solution on the basis laid down in UN resolutions for a bizonal, bicommunal federation".

She also said that Britain would be supporting "the UN efforts to work intensively with the two sides for compliance with the Security Council resolution 1218".

[02] New Ambassadors of Mexico and Ecuador present credentials

Presenting his credentials, Mexico's new Ambassador to Cyprus Mr Ariel Buira Seira said that his country stands by "UN Resolutions 1217 and 1218, which reaffirm that the status quo (in Cyprus) is unacceptable".

He expressed his country's support for "the single sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state of Cyprus with an international personality and a single citizenship" as well as for the call of the international community for the demilitarisation of Cyprus and for a peaceful political solution to the Cyprus problem."

Mexico and Cyprus, he said, can work together to strengthen their relations in the fields of trade, investment, tourism, education, and culture.

Also presenting his credentials the new Ambassador of the Ecuador Dr Leonardo Ruilova said that "the Cyprus problem deserves a just, peaceful and viable solution, one that must contemplate a single sovereignty, an international personality and a single citizenship".

Dr Ruilova, said his country "has given permanent support to the cause of Cyprus, in order to achieve a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem".

He also expressed his eagerness to work with different authorities in Cyprus for the advancement of venues of co-operation for the benefit of the people of both countries.
