[01] Kasoulides: Britain must clarify its position on the Cyprus problem

Britain must restate its position on the Cyprus problem following Sir David Hannay's comments last week, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said yesterday.

"We would prefer a more clear stand on the part of Britain on two counts. I think it needs to be repeated that the Cyprus problem must be solved on the basis of UN resolutions and the bicommunal, bizonal federation."

Replying to questions by journalists after a meeting with President Clerides, Mr Kasoulides pointed out that it must be repeated that the parties in Cyprus are obliged to comply with the latest UN Security Council resolutions.

"The President acted wisely and his move was approved by the political leadership because what counts is the impressions that are created in public opinion, which must be taken into account," he said commenting on President Clerides' reaction to Sir David's comments.

Replying to a question on Cyprus' process of accession to the European Union, Mr Kasoulides expressed the view that technical problems arising as a result of the Turkish occupation of the northern part of the island should not be reduced to a political issue.

Distinguishing between technical difficulties and the political will for accession negotiations , Mr Kasoulides added: "I believe that there is political will on the part of Europe for the process to proceed".

[02] Portuguese Foreign Minister arrives in Cyprus for talks

The Foreign Minister of Portugal Mr Jaime Gama, arrived in Cyprus last night for a two-day visit.

Mr Gama will be received today by the President of the Republic, Mr Glafcos Clerides and later by the President of the House of Representatives, Mr Spyros Kyprianou.

The Portuguese Foreign Minister will also meet with his Cypriot counterpart, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides for official talks.

The two Foreign Ministers will then give a joint press conference and proceed with a working lunch.
