[01] Hercus flies to New York for Cyprus talks

The UN Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative in Cyprus, Dame Ann Hercus is due to fly to New York today for talks on the Cyprus problem.

According to a UN press release yesterday, Dame Ann will hold talks with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. En route, she will stop in London for talks with British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook. She will return to the island on Saturday.

"Both meetings will focus on the UN's 1999 agenda of efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem," the statement said.

[02] Increased interest in the Cyprus problem, says Spokesman

Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides yesterday confirmed that there was an increased interest in Cyprus, in the wake of President Clerides' cancellation of the Russian S-300 missiles. He said missile the decision had created a positive climate.

"There is indeed an increased interest on the part of the international community following the review of the decision on the missiles," Stylianides said. "But this interest has not yet materialised in a concrete manner."

He added that so far there had been no indications from the Turkish side either positive or negative and reiterated the Cyprus government and President Clerides' readiness to discuss all aspects of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions, including issues of substance, of security and demilitarisation.

[03] Cyprus signs agreements related to Human Rights Convention

Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Thalia Petrides, yesterday signed two agreements related to the Human Rights Convention - the Sixth Protocol to the General Agreement on Privileges and Immunities of the Council of Europe and the European Agreement relating to Persons Participating in Proceedings of the European Court of Human Rights.
