Greece's Cultural Minister Evangelos Venizelos underlined the importance of cultural co-operation between the two countries and pointed out that with this agreement Cyprus and Greece declare that they belong to a united cultural field. The cultural agreement provides for upgraded Greek participation in the annual Cyprus festival "Ta Kypria", now underway, the furthering of co- operation in theatre, music, cinema and archaeology, as well as exchanges and co-operation in the international art and music fields. It also provides for Cyprus' participation in the Cultural Olympiad to take place in Greece from the year 2000 to 2004. Asked to comment on the lack of practical interest by the European Union towards the destruction of the cultural heritage in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic, Mr Venizelos said that the European Union shows very little interest in the cultural heritage field. One would expect more sensitivity from an organisation which believes in the common European cultural heritage he said, noting that UNESCO and the Council of Europe show more interest in the situation. [02] Kenneth Brill: US continues to work towards the resumption of peace talksThe US is working towards the resumption of peace talks to set up a bizonal, bicommunal federation in Cyprus, as stipulated in UN resolutions, the US Ambassador in Nicosia Kenneth Brill said yesterday, after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides in view of the President's forthcoming visit to New YorkReplying to a question on whether he rejects the proposal by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash for a confederation, Mr Brill replied: "we study this proposal, we look for ways to open doors, not ways to slam doors." Brill refrained from characterising any side's proposal, noting that the US is "trying to promote a serious political and diplomatic process".
