[01] Cyprus government expresses concern over the further militarisation of the occupied area

The Cyprus government has expressed deep concern over the further increase of military forces and armaments by Turkey in the occupied area.

The Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry, Mr Alecos Shambos, yesterday conveyed the government's concern to the Ambassadors and Charges d' Affairs in Cyprus of the Five Permanent Members of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative in Cyprus, Mrs Ann Hercus.

At the meetings Mr Shambos drew attention to the deliberate escalation of tension in Cyprus by Turkey, a policy which works against all efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem. He stressed that the increase in armaments and military forces in the occupied area is an action contrary to the UN Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 1178 adopted in June this year which repeated its call for the reduction of military forces and armaments in Cyprus.

Stressing the responsibility of the Security Council, and especially the Permanent Members, for the implementation of its resolutions, Mr Shambos called on the Permanent Members of the Security Council to take all the necessary measures and exercise their influence on Turkey to comply with the Security Council resolutions and to cooperate in a process which, through the reduction of military forces and armaments, will lead to the demilitarisation of Cyprus as also envisaged in President Clerides' proposal. Otherwise, he said, the Cyprus Republic reserves the right to take all the appropriate measures under the circumstances.
