Mr Stylianides pointed out that there is some discomfort and bitterness on the part of the Cyprus government for specific positions expressed by US Government representatives, but these have been dealt with through diplomatic channels. He stressed, however, that this does not mean that there is a crisis. The Government Spokesman emphasised the importance of the US initiative in efforts to find a settlement to the Cyprus problem by stressing that "both the Cyprus and Greek Governments have asked for and are awaiting the continuation of the American initiative in the right direction". [02] US Defence Spokesman on the issue of moratorium of flights over CyprusThe US Defence Department Spokesman, replying to a question yesterday as to whether his department has been in touch with Israel for a moratorium of overflights on Cyprus, stated that the US interest with regard to Cyprus was discussed with a number of countries including Israel."The United States believes that some sort of an arrangement regarding the air picture for Cyprus would help to reduce tensions on the island and would contribute to an atmosphere which would be more conducive to settlement discussions", the Spokesman said. He added that an effort in this regard would function with the co-operation of the parties concerned. He made it clear however that the "US would not enforce such an arrangement on Cyprus". [03] Mike Rann: Commonwealth to become much more pro-active over Cyprus.The South Australian opposition leader Mike Rann MP has written a letter to the British Prime Minister Tony Blair, asking for his active support to place the Cyprus problem "as a keynote issue for debate and action" on the agenda of next year's Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in South Africa.In his letter the Australian politician reminds Mr Blair, that Cyprus has remained divided for 24 years following the illegal Turkish invasion and occupation of the island in 1974,.and stresses that the Turkish government continues to defy international law and to ignore a series of resolutions on Cyprus by the UN Security Council and General Assembly and the European Parliament. Referring to Turkey's intransigent position, Mr Rann states that it is quite clear "that Turkey is determined to frustrate moves by Britain and the United States to negotiate a peaceful and just solution to the Cyprus problem". Mr Rann also points out that whenever progress is made, the Turkish government and the Denktash regime take action to torpedo any serious moves towards a resolution of the problem. A letter to the same effect would also be sent to the South African President Nelson Mandela and Australian Prime Minister John Howard, seeking their support.
