[01] Cyprus eager to postpone deployment of missiles, if talks resume, says Clerides

Cyprus can envisage cancellation of the order of the S-300 anti-aircraft missiles if substantive progress is made towards a settlement of the Cyprus issue, President Clerides stated last Saturday.

President Clerides said that "if talks on the Cyprus issue begin and there is substantive progress, we could delay their arrival because we do not want to be blamed for blowing up the negotiations" and added that "if we see that there is progress towards a solution, within the framework of Cyprus' demilitarisation, we could discuss the issue".

The Cypriot President was speaking at Larnaca airport before his departure for a four day courtesy visit to Moscow at the invitation of the capital's Mayor Yury Luzhkov to attend the World Youth Games as a guest of honour.

President Clerides is scheduled to have talks with his Russian counterpart Boris Yeltsin and meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II, as well as other officials today.

[02] Cyprus and Russia will continue discussions on taxation agreement

Foreign Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou said yesterday that Cyprus and Russia have agreed to pursue negotiations to renew an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation between the two countries.

Mr. Christodoulou, who was speaking on his return from Moscow where he held negotiations with his Russian counterpart and other officials, described the talks as "long" and "difficult".

He pinpointed that the reasons that prevented the reaching of a bilateral agreement are mainly due to the Russian authorities' efforts to tackle their internal economic difficulties with the adoption of measures aimed at increasing the country's revenue. Such measures include a change of agreements like the one Russia has signed with Cyprus in 1982.

Mr. Christodoulou pointed out that negotiations on the avoidance of double taxation will continue later in July and stressed that the two countries will benefit a lot from a successful co-operation.
