Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 98-01-14Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>News UpdateWednesday, 14/01/98CONTENTS[01] Estonian Foreign Minister on official visit to CyprusEstonian Foreign Minister, Toomas Hendrik Ilves arrived yesterday in Cyprus at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart, Ioannis Kasoulides, for a three-day official visit.The Estonian Minister said upon arrival that Cyprus and Estonia have much in common and a good deal to share and that the two will find a way to be EU partners. Mr Ilves was welcomed by the Foreign Ministry's Permanent Secretary Alecos Shambos who stressed the need for further cooperation and coordination between the two countries in their EU accession course. The Estonian Minister will have official talks with Mr Kasoulides on the Cyprus problem and the EU-accession course of both countries. The two men will also sign an agreement for the abolition of visas between the two countries. Ilves will also be received by President Glafcos Clerides and House President, Spyros Kyprianou. [02] Government Spokesman comments on Turkish provocationsGovernment Spokesman Manolis Christofides said that Cyprus faces Turkish violations of its air space with "serious and responsible self-restraint."Mr Christofides was commenting on violations by four Turkish aircraft on two separate occasions of Cyprus' air space and Nicosia FIR on Monday 12.1.98. During his press briefing yesterday he said: "We have the possibility to deal with the Turkish provocations. Cyprus and Greece are tackling this with a lot of self-restraint, in a serious and responsible manner." Mr Christofides said the joint Greco-Cypriot defence dogma sends the right message about these provocations in the best possible manner. "Nobody wants a war because a plane flew over Cyprus," he remarked. The Spokesman added that the government was making all necessary representations to international fora over the violations of its airspace by Turkish air force spy planes.
