[01] President Clerides expects initiative on Cyprus to culminate after presidential elections

After February's presidential elections, President Glafcos Clerides expects to see the new initiative for a settlement in Cyprus culminate and negotiations for accession to the European Union to begin.

The President, who was unveiling yesterday in Paphos a memorial to commemorate Greek officers who died during the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island, stressed that the next few months would be "decisive" for the future of Cyprus, and called for maximum unity and careful strategy to deal with the challenge ahead.

Mr Clerides said that as a result of the correct strategy his administration has followed in the past five years, international interest in the Cyprus question has increased.

The President referred to the joint defence pact with Greece and said that it has contributed to the international interest and has given "our national issue an altogether new dimension, in favour of the Greek Cypriot side,"

Mr Clerides called for the maximum possible unity and well thought out, delicate and responsible handling of developments, courage and decisiveness. "If we make mistakes, we shall pay very dearly for them", he said.

[02] President Clinton outlines US interest in Cyprus settlement

President Bill Clinton has stressed US commitment to the process of resolving the Cyprus problem.

In his bi-monthly report on Cyprus to Congress on 5 January 1998, covering the period August - September 1997, highlights include the U.N. sponsored talks between President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Denktash held in Glion-sur-Montreux, Switzerland; U.S. Special Cyprus Coordinator Miller's trip to the region; and U.S. success in convening direct talks between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders on security issues.

[03] Kasoulides meets Pangalos in Athens

Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides discussed with his Greek counterpart Theodoros Pangalos in Athens last Friday ( 9.1.98) the latest hardening of Turkey's position and the political implications relating to Cyprus.

The two Ministers also discussed preparations for Cyprus' accession talks to the European Union, including the parametres within which Turkish Cypriot participation in the talks could be achieved.

Moreover, Kasoulides and Pangalos exchanged views about anticipated moves by the UN, the US and others to contribute towards a Cyprus settlement agreeable to the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.

On Saturday Mr Kasoulides held contacts with representatives of Cypriot organisations in Greece and then flew to Portugal for a meeting with his Portuguese counterpart.

[04] All candidacies for presidential elections "valid and final"

The Central Electoral Office announced on 10 January 98 that all seven candidacies, submitted for the presidential elections due to take place next month, are valid and final.

An official press release said "following the lapse of the deadline for any objections, all candidacies for the election to the presidency are valid and final."

Elections will be held on Sunday 8 February 1998.

The names of the seven presidential candidates will appear in horizontal columns in the following order: Nicos Rolandis, Nicolaos Koutsou, Vassos Lyssarides, George Vassiliou, Alexis Galanos, George Iacovou and Glafcos Clerides.

The ballot papers will also carry photographs of the seven candidates.

[05] International tourist guide seminar hosted in Paphos

A two-week seminar on a comprehensive tourist guide programme started in the western coastal resort of Paphos yesterday.

The seminar, entitled "Training the Trainer", is organised by the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) in cooperation with the Cyprus Association of Tourist Guides.

During the opening ceremony, the President of the World Federation, Cypriot Titina Loizidou referred to the history of the Federation which today has 22,000 members from 27 countries and said the tourist guide is asked to have a "high level of education and training to be able to guide most groups of people."

In his opening remarks Paphos mayor Fidias Sarikas warmly welcomed participants and outlined the crucial role guides play in the smooth operation of the tourist industry.

"Paphos, a city with a history of 2,300 years, considers its selection as the venue for this seminar a gesture of high regard as it points to our capabilities in the commensurate areas of services and facilities," he added.
