Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 97-11-26Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>News UpdateWednesday, 26/11/97CONTENTS[01] Turkey urged to adopt a constructive position on CyprusItaly has called on Turkey to adopt a constructive stance in efforts towards a Cyprus settlement as part of steps aimed at reaffirming its European orientation.A press release issued after a meeting in Rome on Monday between the Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and Turkey's Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said: "Italy hopes that Turkey will consolidate its European orientation through specific moves in the improvement of its human rights record and its relations with Greece, and the adoption of a constructive position on the question of Cyprus, in view of the island's accession to the European Union." The Italian PM, it added, reaffirmed his government's commitment to continue efforts to secure Turkey a place in an enlarged European Conference for candidate countries for EU accession. Prodi said such a process would favour Turkey's prospects for EU membership, once the country's authorities fulfil Europe's expectations on fundamental issues. [02] Kranidiotis and Miller meet in AthensGreece's Foreign Under-secretary Yiannos Kranidiotis met on Monday with US State Department special co-ordinator for Cyprus, Thomas Miller, Athens News Agency reported.The meeting focused on Cyprus and the proposed European Conference, which Turkey hopes to join. Mr. Kranidiotis reiterated Greece's known positions, namely, that Ankara must respond to preconditions set by the EU and contained in the documents drawn up on July 15, 1996 and April 29, 1997. Replying to a question on whether the US is satisfied with the results of the meeting between Prime Minister Costas Simitis and his Turkish counterpart Mesut Yilmaz in Crete, Mr. Miller said "it is not up to us to say whether we are satisfied or not."
