[01] UN Chief will continue efforts for a Cyprus settlement

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's message to President Clerides is that he will continue efforts for a Cyprus settlement.

The message was conveyed yesterday by the UN Chief's special advisor on Cyprus Mr Diego Cordovez who is on an investigatory visit on the island.

Mr Cordovez, accompanied by the UN resident representative Gustave Feissel, had separate meetings with President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash yesterday. The UN envoy is scheduled to meet Mr Clerides again this afternoon.

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, who was present during the Clerides- Cordovez meeting, described it as "cordial", adding that the objective was "to talk about the UN intention to resume negotiations right after February's presidential elections".

Cordovez leaves the island tomorrow and is scheduled to visit Athens, Ankara and Brussels for contacts in these three capitals.

[02] Cyprus problem is a priority for US policy says Senator

US Senator Gordon Smith (R-Or) said that Cyprus should become the source of peace and not a source of greater conflict.

Senator Smith, who is a member of the US Senate's External Relations Committee, responsible for the relations with Europe, was yesterday received by President Clerides and also had a meeting with House President Spyros Kyprianou.

The Senator said that "the US is making Cyprus a priority. Holbrooke's involvement and my presence here is an indicator that we are trying to put an extra effort in reaching a solution".

He added that his visit would help foster continued and good bilateral relations between Cyprus and the US.

Senator Smith also expressed the hope that the people of Cyprus in the end can settle this issue for themselves and that "the tensions between our friends, the Turks and the Greeks, can be reduced and that world peace can be fostered with the settlement in Cyprus".
