[01] Clerides and Denktash to meet in Nicosia on Monday

The Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Fred Eckhard yesterday announced that, as agreed at Troutbeck, President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will meet together prior to the next formal session that the UN will sponsor in their series of discussions and that this meeting will take place on 28 July in the home of the Resident UN Representative in Cyprus, Gustave Feissel, situated in the buffer zone in Nicosia.

Moreover, Cyprus Government Spokesman Manolis Christofides said yesterday that Monday's meeting will focus on humanitarian issues and that other meetings may follow, before they resume their direct talks in Switzerland.

[02] National Council to meet today

A meeting of the National Council, the top advisory body on the Cyprus problem is taking place today, during which party leaders will be briefed on the recent direct talks at Troutbeck between President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Government Spokesman Manolis Christofides yesterday announced that the leaders of the two smaller non-parliamentary political parties, the Liberals and New Horizons will also be attending today's session of the National Council, but that the Green Party has been excluded on the grounds that "the Cyprus problem is not an environmental issue".

The leader of the Liberals, Nicos Rolandis, and the leader of the New Horizons, Nicos Koutsou, will be attending the National Council for the first time as non-parliamentarians.

However, they will only be attending as observers with the right to express opinions but no right to vote, Christofides said.

[03] Syria expresses steadfast support for Cyprus

Syria steadfastly and consistently supports Cyprus' struggle to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, Syria's President Hafez Al Assad has said.

The Syrian President gave these assurances to Cyprus' Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides at a meeting between the two men yesterday, which lasted about two hours.

Mr Kasoulides, who returns to the island today after a three day official visit to Syria, briefed the Syrian President on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and extended an invitation to him to visit the island, which was accepted. The visit is expected to take place towards the end of November.
