[01] President Clerides: We will attend peace talks well aware of difficulties

He added: "Our basic position was that it would have been wiser if we were not invited to attend talks, unless there was common ground between the two sides. We conveyed our views to the Secretary-General, the Americans, the British and the French. In order not to be accused of being negative, which could affect our course towards Europe, we agreed to attend the talks while at the same time pointing out that there is no indication that the Turkish side is willing to solve the Cyprus problem. The current political instability in Turkey, moreover, will not be helpful to efforts to find a settlement", Mr Clerides explained.

President Clerides said the Greek Cypriot side's position is that for progress to be made, the basic aspects of the Cyprus problem must first be determined and one of the most important of these is the question of the country's future security. Without resolving this issue it is not possible to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, he said. The question of security has three aspects: (a) demilitarization, (b) the creation of an international force, with a Security Council mandate, which will be able to intervene if the territorial integrity or independence of the country or security of either community is threatened, and (c) the right of intervention of the guarantor powers should be abolished, he said.

[02] State Fair successfully concluded

A total of 1.600 exhibitors from 40 countries displayed their products in the Cyprus Fair, which has become a major trade event in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Seventeen countries took part in the Fair with their own state pavilion.

According to the organisers, the State Fair Authority, agreements have been signed or negotiations have begun with Saudi Arabia, Oman, Lebanon, England, Ukraine, Switzerland, Greece and Russia to export Cypriot-made furniture, plastics, construction material, solar water heaters and other goods.

Cypriot and foreign business-people also discussed entering into joint ventures.

[03] Cyprus represented at Word Newspapers Congress

Cyprus News Agency (CNA) is represented in the Amsterdam meetings by its Director Andreas Christofides.

The Agency has its own stand at the Info Services Expo '97 organised in the Rai Centre, Amsterdam, between 2-4 June, in conjunction with the two major events for the press industry.

Queen Beatrix I of the Netherlands attended the joint opening ceremony of the two events. Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok addressed the participants.

FIEJ President Jayme Sirotsky spoke about the freedom of the press and referred to the countries where this freedom is grossly violated, naming Turkey as among the top offenders.
