[01] Alternative proposals could be found in talks, says SpokesmanThe Cyprus government believes that many alternative proposals on all aspects of the Cyprus problem could be found through respect of the rule of law, particularly international, constitutional and administrative law, and with respect to United Nations resolutions, as well as taking into account the positions of the two sides as they have been laid down so far.This was stated by the Cyprus Government Spokesman Manolis Christofides yesterday when asked to comment on the possibility of direct talks being enacted without any common ground having been found. The Spokesman said that the Greek Cypriot sides is ready and willing to discuss such proposals in all seriousness in order to find a solution. He added that President Clerides has set the question of security as a priority. The Greek Cypriot side, he said, will accept whatever the UN decides, that is whether to proceed with proximity talks or to abandon them in favour of direct talks. [02] US foreign policy objectives include CyprusThe USA's immediate goals in the region of south-eastern Europe are to reduce long-standing Greek-Turkish tensions and to pursue a comprehensive settlement on Cyprus.This was stated in a report on US foreign policy objectives entitled "A New Security Strategy for a New Century", which was released recently by the White House, which also refers to Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. The report says that the interrelated issues of Cyprus, Greek-Turkish disagreements in the Aegean, and Turkey's relationship with Europe have serious consequences for regional stability and the evolution of European political and security structures. [03] New seismology centre openedThe Minister of Agriculture, Costas Petrides, yesterday inaugurated the new seismological centre in Nicosia.The computerised centre, completed last May at a cost of L21,000, represents the first phase of a three-part L81,000 government programme to upgrade the island's earthquake monitoring system. "Cyprus is one of the most seismically active zones in the world and has suffered many devastating earthquakes since antiquity", the Minister said. [04] Co-operation agreement between Cyprus and SlovakiaAn agreement for co-operation in the economic, scientific, technical and industrial fields was signed yesterday between Cyprus and Slovakia.It provides for exchanges of experts, information, experience, as well as educational programmes. [05] Cyprus and Romania examine trade relationsCyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Kyriakos Christofi, yesterday met with the Deputy Foreign Trade Minister of Romania, Mihai Berinde and discussed trade relations between the two countries.Specifically they examined the possibility of promoting exports to each other as well as to neighbouring countries. The Cypriot Minister said that Rumania could use Cyprus as a stepping to the Middle East, particularly in view of the excellent telecommunications system and good relations with nearby countries. [06] Enclaved Greek Cypriot teacher being blackmailedThe Cyprus government today strongly denounced what it called the "inhuman treatment" of Eleni Foka, one of the Greek Cypriot enclaved teachers, by the occupation regime.Government Spokesman Manolis Christofides said today that „leni Foka is seriously ill but that the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash refuses to allow her to seek treatment in the government-controlled areas. He said that she is being blackmailed that unless she signs documents that would mean recognition of Denktash's illegal regime, she will not be allowed to return to the occupied areas. The Spokesman said that her refusal to recognise the pseudostate is nothing more than the United Nations' refusal to recognise this illegal entity. "Eleni Foka is being punished for abiding by UN resolutions and other international declarations", he added. The President of the Republic and the President of the House of Representatives will convey their condemnation of this behaviour to Andras Barsony, rapporteur for Cyprus of the Political Affairs Committee of the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly, he said.
