With the new security elements, the banknotes "are in all respects on a par with notes of the European Union and other advanced countries", Mr Afxentiou added. The authenticity of the new banknotes can be checked by two new features. The colour of the map of Cyprus they all feature, changes colour, depending on the angle of viewing, while a strong silver security thread, appears as a continuous line, on which the letters KTK (Central Bank of Cyprus), can be seen. They are decorated with representations, taken from the island's history and tradition, as well as from its folk art, flora and fauna. Their size is slightly smaller than that of the existing ones. [02] German envoy: Time for a Cyprus solution is approaching or is running out"Time for a Cyprus solution is approaching or is running out", Detlev Graf zu Rantzau, special envoy of Germany on Cyprus, said during a bicommunal press conference in Nicosia yesterday. Mr Rantzau had just ended a familiarisation visit to Cyprus and he explained that with his appointment as Germany's special envoy for the Cyprus question, his country, as a member of the EU and NATO manifested renewed engagement in trying to help to find a solution to the problem.The German envoy added that his country's role would be to support the UN efforts for a solution to the conflict. He referred to his meetings with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and EU External Affairs Commissioner, Hans van den Broek as well as with other UN officials and American, British and French diplomats. They all want to put their efforts together, he said. Rantzau emphasised that there are two alternatives concerning the talks - they will either lead to a solution or the status quo in the north will continue. Referring to his meeting with the UN Chief, the German diplomat said Annan told him that by the beginning of June he will extend an invitation to both President Clerides and Denktash for face-to-face talks in his presence. Rantzau noted that "whatever the differences in opinion are, the only way to come to a solution is to start discussing the issue". He expressed "hope" that the "forthcoming direct talks" will be met with success. The German official acknowledged that it would "be ideal if a breakthrough would be reached before the EU-Cyprus negotiations start". While on the island Mr Rantzau was received by President Clerides and held meetings with the Foreign Minister, the President of the House of Representatives and political party leaders. He also crossed to the northern Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus where he met Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash.
