[01] Foreign Minister addresses Malta conference

Cyprus' Foreign Minister Yiannakis Cassoulides speaking at the second Euro- Mediterranean conference of Foreign Ministers in Valletta, Malta yesterday, said that peace and stability could prevail in the region only if the Barcelona Declaration was respected.

The Barcelona Declaration, signed by the Euro-Mediterranean conference in November 1995, calls for respect of territorial integrity and renunciation of the use or threat of force against a country's territorial rights.

He stressed that respect for the Barcelona Declaration principles, the UN Charter and international law "could serve as a basis for the solution of various problem, including the problem of my country".

He stressed that Cyprus would use its good relations in the region and its prospect of EU membership to turn the eastern Mediterranean "into an area of peace and prosperity for all." Mr Cassoulides also suggested the participation of all EU member states to enhance the Euro-Med Committee.

[02] Government will co-operate with UN to find overall Cyprus settlement

The Cyprus government yesterday welcomed a statement by UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, expressing his determination to move ahead with intensive efforts towards an overall settlement of the Cyprus problem.

The Secretary-General, in a statement accepting Professor Han Sung-Joo's resignation as his Special Representative for Cyprus, also expressed the hope that the current process will lead to direct talks between the two leaders within the next two or three months. To this end, he added, he will engage in early consultations to identify a successor to Professor Han.

Cyprus Government Spokesman Manolis Christofides said "our side will fully co-operate with the UN in a spirit of goodwill aiming at an overall settlement that will serve the interests of all Cypriots".

[03] Cyprus parliamentary delegation attends IPU meeting

A Cypriot parliamentary delegation returned to Cyprus yesterday from Seoul, South Korea, where they attended the 97th meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The Cyprus problem was discussed during the conference at a Monitoring committee, the results of which, Deputy Nicos Anastasiades, head of the delegation, described as "very positive".

He said that all members of the delegation, had had the chance to brief their counterparts from all over the world about Cyprus, both at the conference's plenary session and in the various sub-committees in which they participated.

The delegation was made up of MPs Nicos Anastasiades, Andreas Philippou, Stathis Kittis, Yiannakis Omirou and Androulla Vassiliou.
