[01] Two new ambassadors accredited to Cyprus

President Clerides on Friday (21.3.97) received the credentials of the new ambassadors of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay and of Mali.

The Uruguay ambassador, Manuel Solsona-Flores, said his government firmly believed that the long overdue solution of the Cyprus problem must be based on the basic premises contained in the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. He said the proposal for demilitarisation of the island was a positive step in the right direction.

The Mali ambassador, Allaye Alphady Cisse, said that the people and the government of the Republic of Mali fully desire the successful conclusion of the peaceful initiatives towards a Cyprus settlement.

[02] Water problem

In a message for World Water Day on 22 March, the Agriculture Ministry said that the water shortage in Cyprus is dire, as the island is going through a fourth year of drought.

It appealed for restraint in water use, as the water currently held in dams is only enough to cover a third of expected demand for the year.
