The letter was sent last week and is similar to previous letters sent by Denktash, Cassoulides said, noting that the Turkish Cypriot leader proposes a dialogue through letters, since, as Denktash argues, President Clerides refuses to meet him. If Denktash's letters were confined to issues of substance rather than propaganda, they could have some political meaning, Cassoulides noted. The firm stance of the Cyprus government is that direct talks can take place only after common ground is reached between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides in Cyprus. [03] US urged to reject Turkey's bid to host next OSCE SummitThe Commission on Security and Co-operation in Europe in the US Congress, has sent a letter to US Secretary of State Warren Christopher objecting to the government of Turkey's initiative to host the next Summit of the Organisation on Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) because of Turkey's poor human rights record and calling for the US to officially reject Turkey as an appropriate venue for a future summit until Turkey's human rights record improves. The letter, signed by Commission Chairman Christopher H. Smith and Co- Chairman Senator Alfonse D'Amato, cites as one of the key factors in their call for a rejection Turkey's continuing illegal and forcible occupation of Cypriot territory in blatant violation of OSCE principles. "A substantial force of 30,000 Turkish troops remains in Cyprus today in a clear breach of Cypriot sovereignty. In recent months, we have witnessed the worst violence against innocent civilians along the cease-fire line since the 1974 invasion, resulting in at least 5 deaths. In addition, Turkish and Turkish Cypriot authorities have failed to fully account for at least 1,614 Greek Cypriots and five Americans missing since 1974", the letter says. [04] 1995 Tourist statistics releasedMore than two million tourists visited Cyprus in 1995, recording a 1,5 per cent increase over 1994 figures, the Department of Statistics and Research has announced. Most tourists came from European countries, with Britain retaining 40 per cent of the total, followed by Germany with 11,2 per cent, Switzerland with 5,2 , Sweden with 4,7, Russia with 4,5 and Greece with 3,1 per cent. In the year under review, there were in operation 2.480 tourist accommodation units registered with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation with a total capacity of 78.427.
