Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 96-11-18Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>News Update18/11/96CONTENTS[01] President Clerides attends World Food Summit in RomePresident Clerides returned to Cyprus on Saturday (16.11.96) after attending the World Food Summit in Rome.Addressing the summit, Mr Clerides said that the basic causes of malnutrition in the world include armed conflicts, social discrimination, population growth, natural calamities and inadequate economic strategies. He expressed his full support for the Summit's Policy Statement and Plan of Action. "Being the President of a small state which has been the victim of a military intervention in 1974 and is still facing the consequences of this event, I am in the position to understand the magnitude of the tragic calamities caused by armed conflicts", he said. While in Rome, the President had separate meetings with foreign dignitaries. He discussed the Cyprus problem and exchanged views on the Cyprus problem with the President of Italy Luigi Scalfaro, the Indian Prime Minister Deve Gowda and the President of Slovakia Michel Kovac. He also met with the Director General of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Jacques Diouf, with whom he discussed questions regarding Cyprus' co- operation with FAO as well as Mr Diouf's forthcoming visit to the island. [02] Cyprus signs two Council of Europe ConventionsCyprus' Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Thalia Petrides, on Friday (15.11.96) signed, in the presence of Daniel Tarschys, Secretary General of the Organisation, two conventions - the Convention on the participation of foreigners in public life at local level and the Convention on laundering, search, seizure and confiscation of the proceeds from crime.The former aims at progressively granting genuine civil and political rights to foreign residents in local communities. It comes into force after its ratification by four member states. To date it has been signed by Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK. The latter aims at countering money laundering from all types of crime, including arms dealing, terrorist activities, fraud and particularly drug trafficking. The Convention is already in force in several Council of Europe member-states.
