[01] Cyprus condemns declaration of Turkish Cypriot pseudo-state

"It is not enough for our side alone to desire a solution. The Turkish side should also genuinely want it", Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said in his on the thirteenth anniversary (15 November) of the

Referring to the forthcoming initiave on the part of the US, Britain and the European Union, he added that now is the time for foreigners who are interested in Cyprus to help, so that when the time comes for direct negotiations, the Turkish side will have the political will it is lacking.

He said that since the illegal declaration of the Turkish Cypriot pseudostate, all efforts of the Turkish Cypriot side aim at securing international recognition for this illegal entity. "This is the reason why we are insisting on arrangements that would guarantee the unity of the future Cyprus state, which would emerge from an agreement between the two sides".

The Cyprus President also emphasised that the responsibility for the handling of our national issue rests with the Cyprus government, which formulates its policy taking into account the views of the National Council and always co-operating closely with the Greek government. "No one else should take actions which adversely affect our policy on the Cyprus question and in the final analysis harm our national cause", he said, calling on all those planning to stage events related to the Cyprus problem, to consult with the authorities beforehand in order to be aware of the government's position.

In her message denouncing the illegal UDI, Minister of Education and Culture, Claire Angelidou, declared that the struggle against the division of Cyprus would continue and noted that human rights of all Cypriots, both Greek and Turkish Cypriots, should be respected.

Students and refugee associations have since yesterday started staging peaceful demonstrations condemning the continued occupation of Cyprus by Turkey and illegal UDI.

Addressing a gathering of various Kyrenia organisations and clubs last night (13.11.96), guest speaker Greek Justice Minister Evangelos Yiannopoulos said "one cannot be optimistic about the prospects for a Cyprus settlement unless the US and Europe exert substantial pressure on Turkey to change its intransigent position".

At the same event US Congressman Ron Klink expressed regret that Cyprus is still divided and added "the final battle will be won when there is one Cyprus, an independent Republic and no dividing line".
