Cyprus Government Spokesman Daily Briefing, 03-12-10Cyprus Government Spokesman Daily Briefing Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: "HR-Net News Distribution Manager" <dist@hri.org>DAILY BRIEFING OF THE PRESS BY THE ACTING GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN 10.12.2003 After today's meeting of the Council of Ministers which was presided over by the President of the Republic Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, the Acting Spokesman Mr Marios Garoyan invited to comment on press reports claiming that the Turkish side had prepared a plan for a solution of the Cyprus problem, said that "the Government's position is crystal clear and has not changed," adding that there was much information on the issue that was published in many newspapers that reiterated the Turkish positions for separate sovereignty. Mr Garoyan pointed out that the Cyprus Government remained firm in its basic position that following the "elections" in the occupied north, the President would ask the UN Secretary General to make all arrangements necessary in order to resume negotiations on the basis of the Annan plan. He added that the UN, the USA and the European Union had at many times stated that negotiations should be conducted on the basis of the Annan plan and within the framework of the UN. "From there on, we shall await the response of the Turkish side, and how it will behave" he said. Replying to a question on whether the UN Secretary General's position calling for commitment from both sides on certain issues in order to reactivate his initiative would imply that President Papadopoulos was about to make such a commitment, the Acting Spokesman said that "the President's position was made clear both in The Hague and afterwards. Therefore, there has been no change in that." Cyprus Government Spokesman Daily Briefing Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
