[02] No foreign troops or guarantees as part of solution, Greek President says

    CNA - Greece/ATHENS 25/10/2016 14:01

President of Greece Prokopis Pavlopoulos has stressed that a solution should not include the presence of any foreign troops on the island or any form of guarantees as this would not be compatible with the acquis communautaire.

He was speaking after having received French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Marc Ayrault in Athens.

Pavlopoulos said that he would like to share in the optimism over the possibility of a solution but also noted that "it constitutes common ground in Cyprus, Greece and the EU that the solution of the Cyprus problem will go through the bi-communal talks and must respect international law as a whole, in particular UN resolutions and of course the acquis communautaire.

    CNA - Athena Arsalidou - France/Strasbourg 25/10/2016 14:26

The European Parliament approved on Tuesday a special provision whereby the EU would pay up to 85% of project costs in Cyprus until the current regional and social policy programming period ends in 2020.

MEPs voted in favour of extending the period of eligibility for Cyprus for the increased EU co-financing rate of 85% until the closure of the 2014-2020 regional and social programmes.

Cyprus has the status of a "more developed region" in the current EU cohesion (regional) policy and would normally receive 50% co-financing for projects under the European Regional Development Fund and European Social Fund programmes.
