[01] Finance Minister: Coop sector doing well but efforts must continueThe cooperative sector has managed a breakthrough in a matter of months and it should continue on course, Minister of Finance Harris Georgiades has said.Georgiades, who was speaking after having visited the Central Cooperative Bank, on Monday, expressed his satisfaction for the work achieved so far and congratulated the newly appointed Executive General Director Marios Clerides over his appointment. He warned against past harmful practices and said that the implementation of the cooperative sector's restructuring programme in full will ensure that trust in the sector will be restored. [02] President Anastasiades briefs Van Rompuy on Cyprus developmentsPresident Nicos Anastasiades briefed on Monday over the telephone European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on the latest developments concerning the Cyprus problem.According to an official announcement , President Anastasiades, in addition to notifying Messrs Van Rompuy, Barroso and Schultz over his letter to the UN Secretary General - sent on 2 January 2014 - had late this afternoon a telephone conversation with Van Rompuy, upon the former's initiative. It is added that, among other issues, the President of the Republic briefed Van Rompuy on efforts to reach a substantial agreement over a common declaration that will pave the way for the resumption of Cyprus talks, with prospects for a successful conclusion. [03] Statistics: Fewer Cypriot residents traveled abroad in DecemberCypriot residents returning from a trip abroad in December 2013 recorded a drop of 2.3% compared to the same month of the previous year.According to the results of a Passengers Survey, published on Monday by the Cyprus Statistical Survey, 80,459 Cyprus residents returned from a trip abroad in December 2013 compared to 82,352 in the corresponding month of 2012, recording a decrease of 2.3%. In December 2013 there was a drop of 4.2% on the trips of residents to Greece (27,194 in December 2013 compared to 28,385 in December 2012) and 8.4% to the United Kingdom (26,279 compared to 28,681 in the previous year). [04] Foreign Minister reiterates support for political solution in SyriaThe Syrian crisis and developments in Egypt and Lebanon were discussed during the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday, with the participation of Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.In his intervention during the session, Kasoulides reiterated Cyprus' support to a political solution in Syria and expressed hope that Geneva II talks will conclude successfully. He welcomed moreover efforts by the international community to destroy Syrian chemical weapons, with Cyprus' contribution.
