  • [01] Finance Minister expresses concerns over the establishment of solidarity fund

    Minister of Finance Harris Georgiades has said that there is a need for the government and the parliament to work in close cooperation and coordination in order for the legislation governing the creation of a solidarity fund to be better regulated.

    Finance Minister and Attorney General on Monday attended the meeting of the House Finance Committee which discussed the matter, after the President of the Republic referred the bill for the establishment of a solidarity fund passed by the House last December.

    The Minister explained that the government and the parliament decide through the state budget the amount that is used for various unemployment schemes and vulnerable groups, noting that there should be a detailed assessment for the purpose of the fund , adding that, he, as the Finance Minister can not be given a ‘blank check' to manage the solidarity fund. He also said that it is better for a committee to be established that will supervise the fund and manage the profits.

    [02] Cyprus, Greece and Malta to promote common interests within and outside EU

    Cyprus, Greece and Malta will intensify their cooperation to promote common interests both within and outside the EU, stated Monday Communications and Works Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos.

    Mitsopoulos made the remark after he and his counterparts from Greece and Malta, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis and Josephon Mizzi, respectively were received by President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades.

    Earlier a Trilateral ministerial meeting on shipping between Cyprus, Greece and Malta took place.

    [03] European Central Bank unveils new €10 banknote

    The European Central Bank unveiled on Monday, in Frankfurt, the new €10 banknote which starts circulation on September 23 2014.

    The new €10 will be easily recognisable as its design is similar to the €10 of the first series, a Cyprus Central Bank press release says.

    It is further added that the design incorporates advances in banknote technology, making the note even more resistant to counterfeiting. It will also be more durable.

    [04] Registrar of Companies to operate electronically by March says President

    The Department of the Registrar will operate electronically by next March, President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades said on Monday.

    Anastasiades accompanied by Minister of Commerce, the Undersecretary to the President and the Commissioner for the Civil Service Reform, visited today the Department of the Registrar of Companies where he toured the Department`s various services and met with the Registrar Spyros Kokkinos.

    In statements following the meeting, Anastasiades said departments that contribute to the economy should be modernized so that they contribute even more, avoid delays and not to allow misuse of the offered services.
