[02] Cooperative Institutions should continue their social role, says Coop Chief

Cyprus Cooperative Credit Institutions should continue its social role, Cooperative Central Bank Director General Erotokritos Chlorakiotis, who will retire on September 30, said on Friday.

Chlorakiotis rebuffed new rumors that a haircut will be imposed on deposits in CCI`s as a means to achieve its recapitalisation, stressing the CCI`s capital needs amounting to €1.5 billion will be covered by the financial assistance programme for Cyprus agreed between the authorities and the Troika last March.

The programme stipulated that large depositors will pay for the capital needs of Cyprus` largest lender, Bank of Cyprus, whereas Cyprus Popular Bank , the island`s second largest bank will be liquidated. For the CCI`s the programme notes that they should undergo a restructuring process which will reduce the number of individual cooperative credit institutions.
