[01] Fifty seven Cypriot beaches awarded Blue Flag in 2013Fifty seven beaches in Cyprus have been awarded the Blue Flag this year on the basis of environmental management criteria covering sewage treatment, coastal planning and protection, bathing water quality, safety and services and environmental education. Fifty six beaches were awarded the Blue Flag last year.Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA) awarded the Flags during a ceremony held at the beach of Kourion, in Episkopi, Limassol, where a Blue Flag was raised. Ayia Napa Municipality secured 14 flags, Paralimni Municipality nine flags and Agyios Tychonas in Limassol seven flags. Paphos Municipality got six flags, Larnaca three flags, while Limassol, Yeroskipou, Polis Chrysochous, Pegia Municipalitis as well as Pentakomo and Pyrgos communities secured two flags each. One flag was awarded to Ayios Athanasios Municipality, Episkopi, Pissouri, Parekklisia, Pervolia and Voroklini. [02] Top prosecutor to investigate BoC acquisition of UniastrumAttorney-General Petros Clerides announced he will launch a criminal investigation into the circumstances the Bank of Cyprus has acquired the Russian Uniastrum Bank.Clerides announced the launch of the probe during a hearing of the three-member investigation committee, appointed by Cyprus President to investigate the circumstances under which Cyprus resorted to the EU bailout mechanism. On Tuesday, President Nicos Anastasiades gave instructions to Clerides to investigate the circumstances of the acquisition of 80% of Uniastrum for €371 million in 2008. Anastasiades` instructions came after a request by Democratic Party President Marios Garoyian who met with Clerides requesting criminal investigation into the circumstances of the acquisition. [03] Building permits down by 30% in first quarter of 2013Building permits were down by 30% at the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period of 2012, Statistical Service data shows.The number of building permits authorized by the municipal authorities and the district administration offices in March 2013 stood at 428. The total value of these permits reached €82.4 million and a total area of 87.3 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 303 dwellings.
