  • [01] Australian Minister expresses solidarity to people of Cyprus

Australia's Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population, Communities and the Arts Tony Burke has expressed his country's solidarity with the people of Cyprus for their economic hardships, after a meeting in Nicosia with House President Yiannakis Omirou.

According to an official announcement, Omirou thanked Burke for Canberra's support to a Cyprus solution and briefed him on the latest developments.

The President of the House of Representatives referred to the difficult condition of the economy and said that disproportionate measures were adopted in the case of Cyprus. Burke expressed his country's hope for a just and viable Cyprus solution.

[02] Defence Minister addresses high level conference in Moscow

Defence Minister Photis Photiou has said the December 2013 European Council can become an historic landmark in boosting defence in Europe, in an address to the "European Security: Military and Political Approach" conference organized by the Russian Ministry of Defence, in Moscow.

He added that the forthcoming European Council poses a major challenge, due to the existing financial and security challenges. It should be perceived "as an historic landmark for boosting the domain of defence in Europe and for ensuring that the European Union will remain relevant, capable, competitive, coherent, cooperative and a credible actor on the international scene", Photiou said.

The Defence Minister further stressed that it is vital for Member States to pool and share their capabilities, infrastructure and facilities, as well as their security concerns.
