[01] House President briefs British MP on economy and Cyprus issue
House of Representatives President Yiannakis Omirou met and briefed
British MP Mary Honeyball on current developments as regards the country's
economy and the Cyprus issue.
During the meeting Omirou reiterated the Greek Cypriot side's position
that the right preparations need to take place before talks can recommence
on the Cyprus issue with a view to reunifying the island, divided when
Turkey invaded in 1974 and occupied its northern third.
At the same time he condemned Ankara's threats and actions against
the exercise by the Republic of Cyprus of its sovereign rights in the
exploitation of its natural resources within its Exclusive Economic Zone
(EEZ) in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Replying
to a question posed by Honeyball as to Turkish Cypriots being able to
become observers at the European Parliament he said Turkish Cypriots
have a right to participate in European Elections and the possibility
of being elected under the umbrella of the Republic of Cyprus.
